My Culinary Conquests:)

STATUTORY WARNING:This post is not for the readers. It's just for me.I'm using MY blog as my personal space. So it might turn out to be boring. But read it if u must.It cannot be that bad!
:D

My interest in cooking was destined to be short lived.
Too bad!!
:P

In the stone ages, girls were expected to know a lot.Washing, housekeeping, taking care of the family and COOKING.

But when i decided to finally befriend my gas stove and microwave after years of giving them 'the silent treatment', it wasn't to follow the tradition, or to please my dad..I did it simply to help my mom. Also, a small part of me thought that I'd be a step closer to becoming a wonder woman I secretly aspire to be!!:P
Like the ones they show on T.V or the ones on the cover of India Today Woman.

Chic, successful, well spoken, well read, well travelled but with all the traditional traits:D

Now I had a very basic idea about the ART.
Switch on the gas.Put the pan.Heat the food.Serve.Eat.

That's it.

Oh yes,i can make omlettes, boiled eggs, tea and the good ol' Maggi.

But nothing proper!

So my first conquest was a pizza.Simple, easy to make and good to eat.
My first pizza was about a year ago.
Well..who on earth got it right the first time?

:P

ofcourse i've mastered that area now.

next, not very long back, was a chocolate cake.
and ahoy!
what a find!

i was finally good at somethin..

i succesfully made a 'proper' malai kofta dish after that. And stuffed bhindi too!
:D

Basking in the new found glory,I decided to make a mango sponge cake.

I had one of those at a friend's..Let's call her C. So at C's place,another friend..let's call her A,got a cake.
Now let's not be judgemental, but hell,A's done a full baking course. She ought to be good!!
Isn't it?
Her cake was pretty, soft, fresh and tasty.

Umm,I can do that too..

So i,very tactfully, asked her the recipe.
And the naive, humble creature that she is..she blurted out everything!!
:P
Or did she??
:x

Now it was my turn.

Clearly,I wanted to have my cake and eat it too.

I baked a sponge cake successfully.
Slit it.
Soaked it.
I sliced mangoes for the topping.
Wonderful!!

Now for the icing.

Cream.Sugar.Vanilla.
Sounds easy..right??

WRONG!!!

I whipped and stirred and beat.
In the end,I got something like a cross between malai and mayonnaise.
To top it all(pun intended), it was insufficient.

The cake looked ugly and smelled even worse.

My interest in becoming a ,as Dollar puts it, 'Cooker' is over.

As for now..
;)

P.S: My mom liked the cake.I've planned to sneak it into her lunch box tomorrow.ALL OF IT.

Happy Hours!! :D

Friends,Romans,countrymen; Lend me your ears(eyes).

This post brings forth the very sombre issue of a phenomena that has escaped the wrath of Mr. Pramod Muthalik uptil now, something that is not just a nuisance and a threat to the Indian Culture but also another example of unscruplous business practices adopted to entice the gullible-HAPPY HOURS! :D

No matter what the name suggests, I'm sure the only people who make use of these hours are either  thoroughly depressed or completely broke dipsomaniacs (or both). :P

I may sound harsh but so would you when you read the story of..ummm...lets say a friend of mine ;) and what happened to the poor soul during the Happy Hours(and the hours that followed)!

So here goes..

This girl, let's call her Tipsy (that's what she becomes by the end of it), plans to go out with a male friend..let's call him Dollar (For more than one reason) :D.
Now all's going great. They've had a great day at a gaming arena, won themselves some totally cool stuff (No kidding!) and are looking forward to a fun filled day.
Suddenly Dollar decides he's hungry.
No problem, thinks Tipsy. We shall eat to our heart's content.
But the mighty Dollar has plans. He spots a restaurant promising of Happy Hours.
1 free drink with every ordered one.Superb.

He thinks,we'll both order 2, get 2 free.
She'll have 1, I'll have 3!!
Alas, that was not to be! :P

The first round appears: a beer and a screwdriver(for the puerile souls, it's vodka with orange juice).
Dollar eyes his drink greedily, drools, slurps and drowns his drink in huge gulps.
Tipsy, on the other hand, takes small, cautious sips.
This is no different from Real fruit juice, she thinks.
I am not drunk.She lies.
I am O.K.
I just need some fresh air.

Dollar laughs.

She hates it.
To prove her point, she gulps down the other round of her drink.
Dollar frets.
Then becomes interested.
Then worried.

You are never getting drunk again, he declares.

Thanks for bringing me here, she thinks.:D

Ofcourse, she changes her mind when she snores through the movie that was to follow.
When she screws up her forks and knives.
When she gets stuck between doors.
When she laughs uncontrollably.
When she talks in whispers that can be heard easily by people on the next table.
And when she loses her appetite.

Only if they had settled for chinese instead!

cheers!!

fare well! :)

On public demand (u guys might not say it but i know u want me to) :P, here comes a post on the much awaited and equally dreaded event that is high on sentiments, nostalgia, fun, frolic, glam sham and basically all the good things(or is it not?) - the college farewell party!

after much speculation, too much debating and innumerable rumours( most of which i had a big contribution towards:D), the FAREWELL finally happened, on 25th April, 2009..

but for those who still dnt know what the whole fuss is about, i'll give u a taste of what goes into makin a farewell successful..

it's not the venue, or the food, or the music..

it's the EMOTION! :D

needless to say, the farewell party or the thought of it evoked memories of the past four years of engineering. And I am proud enough to say that I have thoroughly despised every moment of my undergraduation. But the last days in college have changed some of that..I am sure everyone feels the same..

The idea of being on our own, outside the protective environment all of us are used to, fending for ourselves, out in the BIG BAD WORLD full of sharks in suits has definitely got to many..

But strangely, it's not the protection of parents or teachers one would miss, it's the carmaderie everyone knows noone would find outside. The biggest fear all of us have is that noone would find friends again, that everyone will be competition.

From now on,no more morning movie shows for 50 bucks at spice. No chicken rolls at csc at 2 in the morning. No studyin a night before the exams and still managing to get through. No studyin in groups where everyone teaches everyone else. No samosas at FFC. No hanging out at the flagpost. No hostel nights. No mess parties. No PDP sessions during the now non-existent ragging. No orientations, no club meetings, no fests and last but not the least, no more MASS BUNKS..(the importance and futility of it can only be understood by JSSites).

People from all parts of UP come to JSS, and love the life here. As they say, they get used to the 'NCR way of living'. And now they cannot 'adjust' anywhere else. They hate the idea of going back home. They want to grip the last of whatever is left. And they'll do anything to have it.
That somehow proves how everyone realises the importance of somethin till they lose it!

As for people like me, who are waitin to get out of college, to be at home for 5 months till Infosys beckons, things coudnt get any better :P

The whole drama comes out in the PARTY, where people hug, girls cry( and ruin their make up), and everyone wants to get a picture clicked with every soul they've been friends, acquaintaces or classmates with.

Titles like 'Mr.Rambo' , 'Ms. Masakalli' are given!(sigh!).

Girls start getiin ready a day before with atleast 3 visits to the beauty parlours. Of course much more work, effort and discussion has already gone into the selection of saris, visits to the boutique, buying of accessories and what not.
But i guess all the effort pays off (Right, guys?);)

The event is always smile generating. And yes, everyone is thinkin about the future and how things will shape up. But things have been fine till now. They'll only get better.:)

Here's one to the FUTURE!

GOOD LUCK ALL OF YOU!

confessions of an insomniac..

I wish I never had to write this one,or be the one to write this..whatever!!

This is the most unlikely time for a blog entry..I have project reports to complete, presenatations to make, codes to decipher and ofcourse..SLEEP.
I sorely miss the last one. :(

Sleeping, apart from doing nothin, happens to be somethin i like doing the most.
No seriously,I have a reputation.
Little does the world imagine what goes behind the the four walls of my room :D

I roam in the small space around my bed listenin to the tackiest of bollywood songs(most of which I now know by heart), talk to myself, log in and out of internet messengers innumerable number of times hopin someone would 'find' me(i always stay invisible btw:P), think about the worst things in life, cry at times and basically make myself miserable..

But, inspite of everything, I love the fact that i can never sleep at night (not within humanly hours atleast). I'm contradicting myself but the truth is Night helps me become the person i like..emotional,sentimental and slightly deranged. It doesnt judge me the way others probably would. It lets me be.
It talks to me,doesnt laugh at the absurdity of my ideas. My dreams, the most ludicrous ones, are fulfilled. Every single time.

And like a true friend, it doesnt betray and doesnt get tired of my antics.

i love it and it loves me back!
:)

Good Night!

sigh..

It's funny how i expected to be mobbed by people, congratulated by friends and stalked by admirers on the successful (and much delayed) start of my blog. But,alas, somethings are'nt meant to be:x.
So i thought ,back then, that i'll create a smart, funny, introspective alter ego through this very effective medium.but now that noone has bothered to read the damned thing, leave alone commenting on it, i'd rather say what i want without worrying too much about sounding stupid:P

Last week,i read it in a newspaper, that how Mr.Advani was using the power of blogs for his election campaign. That filled me with a deep sense of satisfaction and respect(for myself and my initiative).
But then I read it further to know that Blogs were "so 2007!" and now "everyone was on twitter(??)".
FANTASTIC!
So i am two years too late and now i'll have to discover that twitter thing..
But till then,i'll be here..writin for myself..in my personal space(i hope u see the bleak irony in this;)).

cheers!!
:)

The beginning..finally!!

Here it is..my very first (successful) post:). After 2 blogs which I either cudnt find or cudnt login into, innumerable blog titles(i am yet to find those very like minded people..grrr) and many many afternoons I spent daydreaming, thinking of the ideal first post that would create a bang..here it finally is.
(sans the bang:D)

The idea of creating a blog struck me first when I followed some myself.Initially I thought that it was a realm of the gifted(thanks to my very proficient cousin) but ofcourse I soon did away with the misconception(thanks to the not so gifted people);).

But I'd still play it safe(right now) and do away with any alleged humour.

more later..

Cheers!
